The IG Index is THE most popular spread betting provider in the world.

According to a recent Investment Trends survey, in 2010 (39% of spread bettors consider it their main trading account). The IG Index is also one of the few spread betting providers that offers a Blackberry trading app for its customers (the only other site I can think of is City Index).

The good thing about the IG Index is that their mobile trading software has won numerous awards, they were even voted “Best Mobile Trading Platform” at the 2011 MoneyAM awards.  In addition to Blackberry, IG Index customers can place trades through the iPhone, Android and regular WAP device.

About the IG Index Blackberry App

The IG Index Blackberry App is pretty much the only choice you have for spread betting on a Blackberry right now.  The good news is that it does everything you need, including the ability to open/close orders, place stop-losses and limits, check the latest market prices and view charts on individual markets.

You can trade across all of IG Index’s markets on your Blackberry, including forex markets from 1 pip, UK shares, interest rates, indices, options and house prices.  The Blackberry uses award-wining PureDeal software which provides a safe, secure and reliable way to trade on your mobile.

Once you’ve placed a trade you’ll receive a confirmation of your ticket within a fraction of a second.  If you have at look at some of the customer reviews of the IG Blackberry App you won’t find any complaints about re-quotes or glitches. Although it’s different to the iPhone app, the fact that the IG Index’s app was voted the top 500 apps by the Sunday Times in 2010 does show their devotion to mobile technology.

The overall user-functionality of the Blackberry app is pretty good, albeit no where near as close as the Android or iPhone app.  When you download the app to your Blackberry and log in, there is no “home screen”.  Instead, you use the Menu to navigate through the different sections of the app.  The menu screen is available on all sections of the app, for example you can quickly click on the Menu tab at the top of the screen to edit view your orders, monitor your positions, view/search markets and check your account balance.

In order to open a trade, all you need to do is search for your market and then click on it.  You’ll then need to fill in your stake size, stop-loss and limit order and press the green Submit button.  Your order will be processed within a split-second.  If you want to add a guaranteed stop-loss than IG Index allows you to do this on the Blackberry too.

To view charts for a particular instrument, click on the market and then go the menu and press “Get Chart”.  This will display a live chart of that market (e.g. DAX 100).  You can adjust the time parameters (1 minute, 5 minutes, 1 day, 1 month) or select a choice of chart types including line, mountain, bar and candlestick data.

In conclusion, the IG Index Blackberry app is very good and probably the best choice for Blackberry users.  That being said, it is no where near as advanced or user-friendly as the iPhone/Android app, which includes bespoke charts, better market navigation, a home screen and overall better functionality.
